Sunday morning in Nara was quiet and a little cool, with thin mist still resting over the garden. Lyn stepped outside in her slippers to check on the small chrysanthemum by the persimmon tree.
"Four leaves now," she called back toward the kitchen. "It's growing faster than I thought."
Linda came out a moment later with two cups of warm tea, handing one to Lyn. "We should write back to John today," she said. "He needs to know when to come."
They sat together at the kitchen table after breakfast, John's letter open between them. Star lay under the table with her chin resting on Lyn's foot, and Pinkysan watched quietly from the windowsill.
"Let's ask for the exact day, and which train he's taking," Lyn said, picking up her pen. "Then we can plan everything properly."
Linda nodded. "And the time too, so we have the kettle ready the moment he walks in."
Lyn wrote slowly, choosing each word with care. She asked John to tell them the date, the day of the week, and which train he planned to take from Kyoto.
She added a small joke near the end. "You can't keep that Kyoto gift a secret from Pinkysan forever," she wrote, smiling as the pen moved.
Linda read over her shoulder and laughed softly. "Good. Now he'll have to tell us something."
Outside, a gentle wind moved through the persimmon tree, and a few orange leaves drifted down onto the grass by the door.
By the time they finished, the letter filled a whole page. Lyn read it out loud once more before folding it neatly in half.
"Tomorrow morning, on my way to work," she said, sliding it into an envelope. "I'll post it first thing."
Star gave a soft, happy bark, as if she already understood, and Pinkysan curled up beside the envelope on the table, keeping watch over it for the night.
