Tuesday evening came gray and quiet, with the first hint of rain in the cool air.
Lyn set a cup of tea on the low table and pulled out a sheet of writing paper. "Should we write the letter tonight?" she asked.
Linda sat down across from her, tucking her feet under a blanket. "Yes. Let's ask him about the walk."
Lyn uncapped her pen. "Dear John," she wrote, then paused. "How do I say it? Just... simple?"
"Simple is best," Linda said. "Tell him the park, the leaves, and that we would love his company."
Lyn wrote slowly, reading each line out loud. "If the leaves are still red when you come, would you like to walk through Nara Park with us? There are deer there. Some of them even bow if you hold out a cracker."
Star's ears twitched at the word "deer," and she tilted her head toward Lyn, as if she already wanted to go.
"Not you, Star," Lyn said, laughing. "You stay home for that one."
Pinkysan jumped up beside Linda and settled on the arm of the chair, watching the pen move across the paper with sleepy green eyes.
"Should we mention the cake?" Lyn asked.
"No," Linda said quickly, smiling. "That part is still a secret."
Lyn finished the letter and read it once more under the lamp. It sounded warm, and a little hopeful, just the way she wanted it to sound.
"It's good," Linda said softly. "Simple, like you said."
Outside, the wind picked up, rattling the last leaves on the persimmon tree. Lyn folded the letter carefully and slid it into an envelope.
"Tomorrow morning," she said, setting it by the door, "this goes straight to the postbox."
Star thumped her tail twice against the floor, as if she agreed completely. Pinkysan only blinked, already half asleep in Linda's lap.
